We meet one such familiar face in the new planet Rusty Pete, who fans would remember as a rugged pirate but is transformed into a charming, witty self-serving pirate in this dimension.

There are alternate versions of characters from older Ratchet & Clank games giving fans of the series a fresh take on familiar faces without making things confusing for newcomers. Writers of Rift Apart promise several nods to the past throughout the game for fans to to discover and enjoy. Instead, you use a dimensional tether to yank at the rift and warp across, seamlessly transitioning to a brand new area of the map with new textures and assets loaded in at a cracking speed. This isn’t like the usual teleport from one area to another that involves a transition screen in most games. You’ll also encounter the game’s new mechanic, dimensional rifts, which are tiny gateways that you can use to warp to another area of the map.

This is one of the many planets that you’ll be able to explore in the full game each layered with its own background lore, hidden areas and mini games. Like most other worlds we’ve glimpsed, this planet too is flush with dense scenery humming with ambient activity making the surroundings feel lively and enticing to explore. At the beginning of this level we see her traveling with Clank to a planet in search of a fixer. Consider her the alternate dimension counterpart to Ratchet. Rivet is a determined resistance fighter and a lone wolf Lombax doing whatever she can to weaken Nefarious’s empire. The second half of the demo focused on Rift Apart’s second playable character, Rivet - the mysterious female Lombax that had fans speculating since her first appearance in a teaser trailer.

It’s here that Ratchet finds himself separated from his partner Clank and where most of the gameplay demo from State of Play takes place. The world design incorporates a 50’s techno aesthetic with pockets of whimsy scattered across roads and walls inviting you to take a closer look. Even though this alternate world is a dystopia it’s layered with that classic Ratchet & Clank charm that’s endearing. Nefarious crashes the parade, snatching the dimensionator and launches Ratchet to an alternative dimension where Nefarious reigns supreme as emperor of a dystopian version Megalopolis. This nifty device can open gateways into other dimensions, which Clank hopes Ratchet uses to find other Lombax species like him though Ratchet doesn’t seem too hot on the idea. You’ll see a bunch of buttery smooth transitions from cutscene to gameplay as Ratchet combats his way to reach the front where Clank presents him with a “dimensionator”. There’s a brief tutorial section that introduces the game’s controls as Ratchet moves through the festival parade on floating platforms fighting goons with his trusty wrench and Burst Pistol. There’s a cinematic polish here that’s visually arresting and something you’d expect to see in a Pixar movie. The graphic fidelity immediately pops off during the opening scenes where we see areas in rich detail laden with lively background activity. We see the titular duo back in the bustling city of Megalopolis where a festival is taking place to honor their heroic adventures. Though it’s accessible to both newcomers and fans of the series. Rift Apart continues after the events of 2013’s Ratchet & Clank game, Into the Nexus.
